Abstract

Advancing age is a major risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases but the underlying pathophysiology is not clear. We hypothesize that aging impairs the ability of neurons in the central nervous system to recover functionally after injury. To test this in retinal ganglion cells in vivo, we developed an optic nerve "stress test" which monitors the functional capacity of the optic nerve and retina, during and after a subischemic injury induced by intraocular pressure elevation. We report that older (18-month) C57BL/6J mice suffered greater loss of inner retinal function compared with younger adult mice following intraocular pressure (IOP) challenge. To investigate whether age-related vu..
